Less Ordinary

I’ve been remarkably productive today!

By Kelsey On May 11, 2012 · Leave a Comment · In Daily Life, Domesticity
  • made blueberry/goji berry/flax oatmeal from scratch for breakfast with blueberries from the garden
  • put away all the dishes in the kitchen
  • did the new dishes
  • started the laundry
  • took out the recycling
  • made an avocado/lettuce/smoked salmon sandwich for lunch with lettuce from the garden
  • peeled 2lbs of potatoes for the potato leek soup I’m making for dinner
  • watched 2 episodes of Being Human

And it’s only 2:30!  I still need to:

  • go for a walk through the neighborhood
  • buy two metal trashcans from the hardware store down the street
  • plant 30 potatoes
  • dig up and replant my earlier potatoes
  • buy 2 lettuce plants
  • go to crossfit with Marc
  • charge my camera batteries for tomorrow’s shoot
  • make potato leek soup for dinner
  • confirm with Charlotte that we’re still on for jam-making next week

I think I should be able to get it all done!

Tackling 101 in 1001…Again

So, there’s a self-improvement thing that has been going around for at least 6 or 7 years, called 101 in 1001.  The general gist of the idea is to write a list of 101 goals that you want to have accomplished within 1001 days (about 2..75 years).  The longer period generally works better because it allows for more flexibility and, more importantly, allows for failure.

A few years ago, before I left for Korea, I made my 101 in 1001 list.  It didn’t last long because I made some key mistakes in its creation.  For one, I based many of the goals on assumptions about what my life would be like.  I assumed I’d be in Korea for 2-3 years, that I’d be single, that I’d have a good amount of money in savings, and that I’d have figured out the photography industry.  Ha!  I also wasn’t really much [...]

Things to Improve Upon

I’m a big believer in continual improvement.  There may be no such thing as perfection, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on improving yourself and your life.  Instead of hard and fast New Years resolutions, I tend to try to go into every new year with a sense of some things I’d like to improve in general.  My theme for this year was being healthier and more environmentally friendly.  Though I already shy away from processed foods and I recycle like a mofo, I felt that I still had plenty of room for improvement.  Here’s what I’ve been doing to try and improve myself in those areas, and how I’ve been doing on each of them:

Packing lunch:  I’ve almost entirely stopped bringing my old overly processed microwave dinners to work, but I’ve also been eating out for lunch more often now that I found a [...]

Because really, what use is having a sidecar if you can’t use it for running errands?

Gardening Progress

Last year I started my first major attempt at gardening.  I grew some turnips, radishes, beans, tomatoes, and a few other things to varying degrees of success.  This year I got a late start on my garden due to the whole “we thought we were moving to Winchester” thing, but it has turned out alright.  I’m using what I learned last year and have supplemented that knowledge with a few books on container/urban gardening.

This year, with a few exceptions, I’m growing everything in containers.  I have the space to plant stuff in the ground, but I want to prove to folks that you can grow quite a bit of your own food on a balcony-sized space.  This year I also gave up on some poor performers from last year (broccoli, spinach, onions, peas) and I’m also trying some new things (cucumbers, potatoes, more herbs, greens, kale, some of [...]

Coming to a Close

On April 17, 2012 By Kelsey
Columbines

I have just three teaching days left in my long term assignment, and about two months left in the school year.  It’s a little weird how fast this year went by – it feels like I just hit my substituting swing a few months ago, and now the year is almost over.

This long term assignment has taught me a lot.  For one, I am definitely absolutely sure that I have no desire to make teaching a career.  It’s a good skill to have as someone who likes living abroad, but it is not something I find fulfilling.  I spend most of my work day wanting to bang my head against my desk in frustration with how utterly fucked this generation of students is, and how little they care.

It has also taught me that the frequency of work depletes my “crazy” batteries far more than the type of work. [...]
